What is a CEREC Crown?

A dental crown renews the shape, comfort, and function of a tooth damaged by deep decay, severe wear, or a fracture. CEREC (Chairside Economical Restorations of Esthetic Ceramic) is a sophisticated system for designing and making high-quality, metal-free dental restorations in one patient visit.

Developed by Sirona, CEREC utilizes 3-D photography and CAD/CAM technology to assist in designing a virtual restoration (onlay, inlay, crown, or bridge) without taking impressions. When combined with our in-house milling unit, the system can build the actual restoration while you are still in the chair.

Benefits of CEREC Dental Crowns

In addition to the aesthetic benefits of CEREC, patients also experience the following advantages:

  • No temporary restorations
  • High-quality ceramic products
  • Minimal invasiveness
  • Fewer injections and improved comfort
  • Fewer dental visits
  • Cost effectiveness
  • More natural tooth is saved
  • Long-lasting restorations
  • Biocompatible solutions

Our Same-Day Crown Process

Tooth Preparation

The dentist will administer an anesthetic and prepare your tooth for the restoration, removing decayed and weakened tooth tissue. This preparation is similar to many other restorative techniques.

Digital Tooth Impressions

Next, we take an optical impression of the prepared tooth. Instead of filling a tray with impression “goop” that requires you to hold it in your mouth until it hardens, we coat your tooth with a non-toxic, tasteless powder. We then use a camera to take a digital picture of your tooth. The full optical impression process only takes a minute or two.

Create the Crown

Next, the CEREC machine helps us create the restoration for your tooth. The CEREC 3-D software takes the digital picture and converts it into a 3-D virtual model on the computer screen. Our team uses this image to design the inserting block for milling chamber restoration using the CEREC 3-D computer program.

Within a few minutes, the restoration design data is sent to a separate milling machine in the office. A ceramic block that matches your tooth shade is placed in the milling machine. About 10 – 20 minutes later, your all-ceramic, tooth-colored restoration is finished and ready to bond in place.

CEREC Crown Fitting

Finally, the dentist tries the restoration in your mouth to ensure proper fit and bite. The restoration is then polished and bonded to the prepared tooth. Your tooth is restored with no “temporary” or return trip necessary. All of this is done in a single appointment!

FAQs About Dental Crowns in Portland

How Long Do CEREC Crowns Last?

CEREC Crowns are a highly durable option that, when cared for properly, can last 10-15 years or longer.

Does Getting a Dental Crown Hurt?

Dental crown procedures are generally painless, as they are conducted with a local anesthetic. Our SE Portland dentist works to restore your smile while making the process as simple and pain-free as possible.

Why Choose CEREC Over a Traditional Crown?

There are several disadvantages of traditional crowns, such as:

  • Traditional crowns typically require multiple appointments over several weeks.
  • Older methods require that an impression be taken and sent to a lab where your crown is fabricated.
  • The impression materials used are messy and uncomfortable for the patient.
  • Measurements gleaned from this impression process aren’t always very precise or accurate.
  • Often, an ill-fitting, temporary crown is placed while the patient waits for the permanent restoration.

At Mint Dental Works, we have invested in state-of-the-art CEREC technology, which provides our patients with the convenience of beautiful, durable custom restorations in one visit!
