Exams and Cleaning

Get That Minty, Fresh Feeling!

Regular, professional dental cleanings and exams are essential for maintaining a healthy mouth. The American Dental Association recommends visiting the dentist at least two times per year to ensure optimal oral health. Semiannual appointments will help you learn more about how to thoroughly care for your teeth and gums and help detect early stages of periodontal disease, which is often painless and difficult to detect on your own. An estimated 75% of Americans reportedly have some form of periodontal disease. Early detection of periodontal disease reduces the risk of permanent damage to teeth and gums and can prevent more extensive and costly treatment down the road.

Our hygienists evaluate each patient with an oral examination to look for signs of periodontal disease. The findings from this exam help us to determine what type of hygiene cleaning appointment is appropriate. If your gum tissue is healthy with no signs of active periodontal disease you will have a routine adult cleaning appointment which includes:

  • Removal of calculus (tartar): Calculus is hardened plaque that has been left on the tooth for some time and is now firmly attached to the tooth surface. Calculus forms above and below the gum line and can only be removed with special dental instruments.
  • Removal of plaque: Plaque is a sticky, almost invisible film that forms on the teeth. It is a growing colony of living bacteria, food debris, and saliva. The bacteria produce toxins that inflame the gums. This inflammation can be the start of periodontal disease.
  • Teeth polishing: This final step removes stains and plaque that is not otherwise removed during tooth brushing and scaling

During your appointment, we will also:

  • review your overall health and oral health
  • check your bite and jaw for any problems
  • evaluate your risk of tooth decay and gum disease
  • evaluate existing tooth restorations
  • take dental X-rays if necessary
  • conduct an oral cancer screening
